Healing with Heart
Spotlight on Kirk, Mental Health Counselor
Imitation is the world’s greatest compliment.
And sometimes, healing shows up in the most unexpected and beautiful ways.
A Curiosity That Led to Connection
Kirk has always been curious—about people, about stories, and about the world around him. Early in his career, that curiosity took him halfway across the globe, where he taught English in Thailand. But when it was time to return home, one thing was clear: whatever came next had to be rooted in connection.
That calling ultimately led him to TaraVista Behavioral Health Center, where he has spent the past two years as a Mental Health Counselor on our adolescent unit, working closely with young people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
A Portrait of Impact—A Moment that Stopped Him in his Tracks
In the photo featured here, Kirk is holding a portrait of himself painted by one of his patients. He was completely blown away by the gesture.
The assignment that day was simple: draw a sunset.
But the patient chose something else.
“You are my sun,” the patient told him.
“You brightened my day and helped lift the darkness that was heavy over me.”
Moments like this stay with you. They remind us that healing isn’t always loud or dramatic—sometimes it’s quiet, deeply personal, and profoundly human.
The Power of Being Heard
When asked what he brings most intentionally to his work with young patients, Kirk doesn’t hesitate.
“I’m a good listener. A lot of healing happens when someone feels truly heard. It sounds simple, but it’s harder than you think.”
In a world that often rushes past pain or tries to fix it too quickly, Kirk understands the importance of presence—of slowing down and making space for a young person’s voice.
The Bittersweet Goodbyes
What’s the best part of the job?
“The best—and the hardest—part is letting my patients go.”
Kirk describes the deep honor he feels in watching adolescents leave TaraVista stronger, more hopeful, and ready to continue their lives beyond inpatient care. But those goodbyes are never easy.
“There’s so much pride in seeing them move forward,” he shares, “and at the same time, it’s bittersweet to let go.”
A Message to Young People Who Are Struggling
Kirk’s advice to youth navigating heavy emotions is simple, honest, and heartfelt:
“You are not alone. It might not be easy, but find someone to talk to—a teacher, a guidance counselor, a family member. People want to help. They really do. Trust in that, and trust in yourself.”
Healing with Heart
Kirk’s story is one example of what Healing with Heart looks like at TaraVista—where care is grounded in compassion, listening, and genuine human connection. Every day, our team shows up not just with clinical expertise, but with empathy, patience, and heart.
This is just the beginning of our Healing with Heart series. Stay tuned on social media as we continue to spotlight the people behind the care who make moments like this possible.
